Reddit Inspired Cake Pops

Dear Friend, There's this thing called Reddit. Maybe you're familiar, maybe you're not. For the uninitiated, Reddit is a social news site, where users can submit links to pretty much anything they want; pictures, articles, recipes, etc. The Reddit community will vote on these links, positively or negatively, and the popular ones to make it to the front page. If this is the first you've heard of it - ummm, there goes your productivity. Reddit has many subpages - food porn and baking being two of my favorites. Sometimes I submit my recipes to Reddit, and people seem to really like my tofu scramble, rainbow cake, frittata, and salted caramel brownies. I have also learned that people really like bacon. And narwhals, but I've yet to work them into a recipe. The Reddit community has a mascot. He's an adorable little alien with big orange eyes. I'm not sure he has a name, so I will just call him the Reddit alien. Today I made some Reddit alien inspired cake pops - although when I asked one of my friends to identify the little alien, he said it looked like pokemon!!?!?@?

To be honest, I didn't have high hopes for these Reddit alien inspired cake pops, so I made some sprinkle ones as a back-up - you can't go wrong with sprinkles. I once knew a girl from the Netherlands who, every morning for breakfast, ate toast with butter and sprinkles. She liked the crunch.

Making cake pops is like a flashback to grade school arts and crafts. First you need to bake a cake. You need to bake a cake and let it cool. Then crumble it into a bowl - this is fun. I know you have some icing in the fridge, for special occasions - like snack time. Add some icing to the cake, and mix it all around. Your cake should now look more like dough.

Take the cake and form it into bite-sized balls, either using a melon baller to make uniform shapes, or with your hands. You will need to shape the Reddit cake pops into an oval. For the ears, take two small pinches of the cake mixture, and roll them into tiny balls. Fasten them to the sides of the oval ball with some icing. Place the cake pops in the freezer for 30 minutes - this will make things easier. You will likely swear less.

You will need some fondant for the eyes and mouth. If you can get your hands on an edible marker, even better. To make the fondant black and orange, place a few drops of food coloring in the fondant. Work with your hands, kneading, until the color has combined.

Roll the fondant into two tiny eyes, and a tiny mouth. Grab the stamens, which are generally used for making tiny cake flowers, acting as the center bit of the flower.

Heat the chocolate with a double boiler, or MacGyver one up with a couple of pots, like I did. Once the chocolate is melted, grab a lollipop stick and dip it into the chocolate. Insert it into the cake pop, and then dip the whole thing in. Swirl it around, ensuring you get an even coat. Tap off any excess chocolate. Set this lollipop stick into a piece of styrofoam to let dry.

Fasten the eyes and mouth to the cake pop with a bit of chocolate. Insert the stamen into the top, and bend to the right.  If you are making sprinkle pops, dip the cake pop into the sprinkles while the chocolate is still liquid. Once it hardens, the sprinkles won't stick.  Cake pops are totally cute and awesome.

REDDIT CAKE POPS RECIPE
makes 35 - 40

Ingredients
1 box cake mix, any flavor
1 can icing, any flavor
1 - 2 bags melting chocolate
35 - 40 lollipop sticks
fondant
orange and black food coloring
1 pack of white cake stamens
1 -2 pieces of styrofoam

Directions

1. Assemble the cake mix as per instructions. Bake, and then let cool completely. Once the cake has cooled completely, crumble it into a large bowl. Mix in 1/2 to 3/4 can of icing. The cake should hold together into a firm ball without being too mushy.

2. Once the cake and icing are combined, roll the cake into tiny balls - it is possible to use a melon baller to ensure uniform size. If you are making a standard cake pop, roll the cake into a perfect ball. If you are making the Reddit cake pops, roll the cake into an oval ball. For the ears, roll two small balls of cake, then fasten them to the sides of the larger oval with a bit of icing. Place the cake pops onto a baking sheet, lined with parchment paper, and put in the freezer for 30 minutes.

3. To make the eyes and the mouth for the Reddit cake pops, take the fondant and mix in some orange food coloring into one piece and some black food coloring into another piece. Work the fondant with your hands until until the colors have combined. Continue to add a few drops of color at a time, until you get the desired color. Make sure to wear gloves, as the color will dye your hands.

4. For the eyes, roll the orange fondant into tiny orange circles, and for the mouth, roll the black fondant into a long narrow strip.

5. With a double boiler, or a make-shift double boiler (a small saucepan placed into a larger saucepan that has been filled with water), melt the chocolate. To do this, bring the water to a boil, then remove it from the stove. Fill  the small saucepan with chocolate, and then place it into the boiled water. Stir continuously until the chocolate has melted. The chocolate should have a thin consistency - being able to drip of the end of a spoon. If the chocolate has become to think with over heating, add some vegetable oil to thin it out.

6. Remove the cake pops from the freezer. Take a lollipop stick and dip the end into the chocolate. Insert the dipped end into the cake pop 3/4 through. Dip the cake pop into the chocolate, swirling it around, ensuring that it has been completely covered. Tap the stick with your finger, removing any excess chocolate. Place the lollipop stick into a piece of styrofoam to let dry.

7. Attach the eyes and mouth to the Reddit cake pop using a bit of chocolate as glue. Insert the stamen into the top of the Reddit cake pop and bend it to the right. If you are making sprinkle cake pops, dip the pop into the sprinkles before the chocolate had dried.
